Our Rights, Our Communities.

The Our Rights, Our Communities project was a partnership involving community organisations Unity Sisters, Govanhill Baths Community Trust and Milk. It led to a Peer Research Paper and Documentary Short “It Will Start with Me”.

What is our aim?

The aim of this project is to build a unique model of community based support. We will do this through a programme of activities that will engage 600 refugee and asylum seeking women for over 8 months.

Benefits Gained

  • Develop understanding of human rights

  • Develop employability skills

  • Create solid support networks

  • Have access to tailored advocacy and signposting

  • Develop confidence and skills to engage and fully participate in decision-making

What is our plan?

We plan to deliver different types of culturally appropriate and effective events, workshops and training sessions that will be the base of tailored human rights awareness and advocacy training.

Activities Provided

Activities will include confidence building workshops, storytelling, filmmaking and other visual arts; upcycling craft skills, language and digital skills buddy circles. The project will develop community assets - a network of wise women - embedded within the groups and refugee communities.

Gislaine

“I am looking forward to help women learn what advocacy is and showing them how to be able to express themselves in any type of situation! I hope I can help more and more women become confident and build strong social skills!”

Weam

“As a woman living in this world, I hope every woman knows her rights and be more confident when asking for them. We are living in a world where you can find racism and discrimination everywhere so being part of the Our Rights, Our Communities Project will give me a chance to help vulnerable women understanding their rights and fight for what they deserve.”

Lil

“Working and being part of the Our Rights, Our Communities Project is a privilege for me. Helping, supporting and sharing with other women who, like me, have had to leave their country, has become the engine that moves my days forward.”
